Stop Bead
To make a stop bead, use an odd bead that is a different color or shape than the ones for the beadwork. This will make it easier to see and not confuse with your work on the first few rows. Wrap the thread around the bead. The needle should be at one end of the thread, leaving a tail of thread trailing out of the stop bead. The stop bead should slide back and forth on the thread. Slide it up the thread until the tail is the length desired.

Square Stitch
Some times called African peyote.
Square stitch creates a supple fabric of woven beads that resembles Loom Stitch, but is much more versatile as it can also be adapted for sculptural work. Unlike Loom Stitch, which requires a loom, it is worked using only needle and thread.

1-Drop Square Stitch (1\1): String on a stop bead and enough beads for desired length of foundation row. Strings on 1 bead, run through the last bead of foundation, pull tight and run through the bead just added. To begin a new row, work in the opposite direction.
